CHAPTER THIRTEEN

"What just happened here?" Madison asks in front of me.

"I don't know, man," Willis says, appearing behind her. "He just went crazy. Started giving me a death stare. Then he ran off." He shrugs as he tries to look tough and reclaim his dignity.

Madison crosses her arms. "Well, Riley’s out of here."

But their voices fade into the background. Riley almost lost control again, and it's partly my fault. A part of me wanted Willis to take a few blows to the face, but not for him to die. No, I don't want him to die for a couple of snide comments. What is wrong with me?

And what the hell is wrong with Riley?

"What happened?" Lily asks me.

I look right at her as Cat yanks her back by the shoulder. But Lily pulls away and glares at her cousin. This is official business.

Or maybe it's fear because we both know what Riley attacking someone will mean. I've got to throw Willis under the bus and gloss this over as a regular fight, or the hunters will turn their attention on Riley. I can't chase him now. This needs smoothing, and fast.

Forcing my hunter senses to the background, I say, "Willis was taunting Riley. Calling him and me pigs. Then Riley got upset and punched him." Please, I hope you didn't see me making Willis stand there and take it.

"We all know that's what they are," Willis mutters.

"Enough," Madison says. "We can't be having fistfights in the Committee. Riley’s out if he started it."

Lily tenses and raises her shoulders. She’s not happy about that or about Willis staying.

Riley’s clearly not liked here. The Beaumonts have always been the family too good to associate with anyone, and I'm seeing that people view them as the deadbeat dad. The dad who walked out, leaving them to struggle and wonder what's going to happen next. I can understand that.

And it's a mess the Nightsides might not clean up.

To my relief, Cat nods and speaks to the group. "Things have been tough in this town. We get it."

"Riley didn't want to cause trouble," I say, though I know his chances of getting back into the Committee are slim to none. "I'd better go talk to him and let him know. He'll understand why he can’t come back." I keep my voice neutral, not wanting to dare tip Cat off that something is very, very wrong with my boyfriend.

"I doubt he will," Willis says, pumping himself up and looking all tough. "He comes back, he gets it."

"You'd better. You're excused," Madison says. "Now, the rest of you, follow me. We should get done by three-thirty and then we can move on to the gym. I'll unveil whose layout we're using this year..."

I'm not listening anymore. Without a glance at Lily, and trusting that she’ll do the rest of the smoothing, I hurry out of the former Forbidden Hallway and jump over some fallen football helmets. Bursting into the multi-purpose room, I run across the concrete floor and to the far door.
